Jackson waterways that have been deemed unsafe

A water-contact advisory for a section of the Pearl River near has remained in effect since 2019. At issue is raw and under-treated sewage water and associated bacteria flowing into the Pearl River from Jackson. According to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality it remains at levels unsuitable for human contact.

Tilda Slough: The waterway located along the south side of Pascagoula Street and east of Jefferson Street flows through an underground culvert that emerges at Interstate 55 near the Pearl Street exit. The slough drains north under High Street where it is pumped to the Pearl River.  

Belhaven Beach: A popular sandbar on Belhaven Creek where it flows into the Pearl River.
